Cancer Health Literacy Patient Education Resources (C-HLPER)

Thank you for your interest in the Cancer Health Literacy Patient Education Resources (C-HLPER). The C-HLPER worksheets are designed to be used during physician-patient discussions at the time of initial consultation. They are intended to be used by multidisciplinary oncology teams, including but not limited to radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and surgeons

In 2003, National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) conducted the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) - a nationally representative assessment of adult literacy levels. Survey results revealed that 90 million American adults read at the two lowest literacy levels, basic or below basic.

Health literacy is deeply rooted to both an individual's and a community's socioeconomic context, and is a powerful mediator of the social determinants of health. The goal of C-HLPER is to provide patients with cancer specific health literacy appropriate resources, with the larger goal of reducing health disparities, which fosters health equity and social justice.

We currently have C-HLPER resources available in English and Spanish for the following sites:

  • Breast cancer
  • Oropharyngeal cancer
  • Lung Cancer (Non Small Cell Lung Cancer and Small Cell Lung Cancer)

These worksheets are designed at an appropriate health literacy level. They are intended to enhance physician-patient communication by offering patients a visual explanation of the diagnosis and treatment options (e.g. sizing scales and anatomical location).

After completing this brief survey you will be able to download the C-HLPER worksheets. Information gathered from the survey will be kept confidential. You will be contacted via e-mail no more than twice per year to determine if and how you are utilizing the C-HLPER discussion guide(s) in your clinical practice.

Please complete the survey below. After you press SUBMIT a ZIP file containing the resources will be available for you to download.

Please contact Leah D'Souza at leah_a_dsouza@rush.edu with any questions or concerns.

Thank you!
